Integrated Circuits¶
The numbering scheme of the MC6800 family was fairly straightforward, with the “MC” prefix indicating a Motorola integrated circuit. The “68” prefix was a brand identifier for the family, with the following two digits indicating the specific function of the chip. This logical system allowed engineers to easily identify the role of each component within the larger system.
Family members were further identified by additional components within the IC number

Comparison: Motorola MC6800L2 vs. MC68B00
The processing cores and performance characteristics of the MC6800L2 and the MC68B00 are identical; both are rated for a maximum clock speed of 2.0 MHz. However, they represent separate eras in Motorola’s packaging technology and part-numbering conventions.

From an electrical and execution standpoint, these two microprocessors are fully interchangeable drop-in replacements. Both utilize identical 40-pin DIP layouts and require matching external two-phase non-overlapping clock driver circuitry.
Timing Equivalence Rule
Both components share identical internal bus cycle metrics:
\[f_{max} = 2.0\text{ MHz} \implies t_{cyc} \ge 500\text{ ns}\]The minimum allowable clock pulse high width (\(PWH_{\phi\_1}\)) for both variants is strictly bounded:
\[PW_{H} \ge 180\text{ ns}\]Warning
While a ceramic MC6800L2 can always replace a plastic MC68B00P, replacing an MC6800L2 with a plastic MC68B00P in high-temperature or high-humidity industrial settings may degrade environmental tolerance due to the shift from gold/ceramic to tin/plastic materials.
